LAKE TILLERY AND BADIN LAKE COMMUNITIES

TOWN OF NORWOOD AND LAKE TILLERY AREA YOU CAN CLICK HERE FOR ALL AREA INFORMATION MY LOCUST LAKE TILLERY COMMUNITY Town of Norwood & Lake Tillery Area Gateway to Lake Tillery" Norwood is located in southern Stanly County on the shoreline of beautiful Lake Tillery. Indeed, Norwood prides itself on being the "gateway" to Lake Tillery. Unlike most small towns, Norwood is a self-sufficient town of about 2,500 people that has its own water, sewer, police, recreation, and volunteer fire departments. The greater Norwood area contains about 10,000 people. Norwood is described as an "industry friendly" community that contains a variety of manufacturing firms, including Norwood Yam Sales, Michelin Aircraft Tire Corp., Aeroquip, Arrowood, Stanly Fixtures, Roman Knit, and American Lockstitch. Norwood's main attraction is Lake Tillery. Outdoor recreation is abundant, centered around the beautiful lake with boating, fishing, and other water sports readily available. The lake is surrounded by homes. The newly re-designed Piney Point Golf Club, located near Lake Tillery, is a championship course with a clubhouse and swimming pool. Professional sports and two international airports are about 90 miles away in Charlotte and Greensboro. The downtown shopping area is lighted by attractive turn-of-the-century light posts with well-maintained buildings that house small, privately-owned businesses. The town is historically significant as well, having developed around the rivers in the years following the Revolutionary War. The "Battle of Colson's Ordinary" took place near there in the middle of the war. Some years later, in the late 1780's, three Allen brothers had dreams of making a river port on the peninsula between the Pee Dee River and the Rocky River. It was called Allentown. The arrival of the railroad in 1891 caused the community to flourish and the name was changed to Norwood when the post office was moved to Norwood Brother's Store. Norwood has been called the best kept secret in North Carolina. We would like to share it with you. Norwood Is the Gateway to Lake Tillery. Lake Tillery is one of the Piedmont's best recreational lakes. The fishing and boating are great! Numerous, attractive lake front housing communities provide residents with year-round enjoyment of this popular destination. The northern end of the lake is bounded by Morrow Mountain State Park and the Uwharrie National Forest. It is here that the tranquil Uwharrie River flows into the mighty Yadkin-and the river changes names to the Pee Dee. BADIN LAKE "A French-flavored town at the foot of the Uwharries" In the Spring of 1913, a French company, L'Aluminium Français, began work on a dam at the narrows of the Yadkin River--it becomes the Pee Dee River a few miles downstream--to provide power for a smelter. A town to house the company's workers was to be built beside the newly-formed lake and named for company president, Adrien Badin.Today, this peaceful village with its picket fences and well-tended gardens, provides a rare look at the characteristics common to many of the state's company towns with the added attraction of its unique French Colonial architecture. In 1990, the citizens of this town voted to incorporate. On the shores of Badin Lake, the town was planned at the time the aluminum plant was being built in the early 1900's. At one time, the entire development was owned by the Aluminum Co. of America. The homes are now privately owned and the streets are maintained by the State Highway Department and the Town of Badin. Badin and its environs are considered unique, both historically and industrially. In 1984, Badin was certified as a Historic Place. The original Stanly County Country Club clubhouse dates back to when the French Aluminum Reduction Company bought up the Whitney holdings before World War I.
